J.J. Johnson was one of the first trombonists to embrace bebop music. He has long been regarded as one of the leading trombonists of the post-swing era, exerting a pervasive influence on other jazz musicians. Nat Adderley appears on a couple of cuts, and he shows just what a terrific player he was back when this album was recorded. But J.J. is in top form, and that’s as good as it gets. The opening cut, Monk‘s “Misterioso” is a marvel; J.J. on “Laura,” “Blue Trombone,” “My Old Flame,” and “Goodbye” are especially good. Those who are not familiar with J.J. would find this CD a good introduction.
