Description
Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian is a (political conscious) concept album focusing exclusively on the history and problems the native Americans face in the United States. Some of the songs like for example “The Battle Of Ira Hayes” were based on true stories. A music critic from the New York Times cited the album as “one of the first truly important folk albums that could be classified as protest music”. Five songs on this album were written by the late Native American singer-songwriter Peter Lafarge. In 2014 the “Bitter Tears Revisited” tribute album “Look Again To The Wind” was released with contributions from a.o. Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings and Emmylou Harris. This 1964 album will probably be remembered as “One of Johnny Cash‘s greatest works”.
