Description

The Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major was composed by Maurice Ravel between 1929 and 1930. It was commissioned by the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during World War I. The concerto with the famous Dutch Daniel Wayenberg on piano also displays Ravel’s unsurpassed gift for orchestration, favoring dark-hued sonorities thanks to the left-hand’s proximity to the lower range of the keyboard. All parts were recorded ‘LIVE’ by the Dutch radio in the 1970’s to 1980 with Herman Krebbers on the violin and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Kirill Kondrashin.
